Overview

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide (a 15-amino-acid chain) derived from a naturally occurring protective protein found in gastric juice. Its name reflects this origin: “Body Protection Compound.”

Research Context

The research literature around BPC-157 is unusually broad for a single peptide, spanning gastrointestinal protection (its original research context), tendon and ligament healing, and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation). Much of the mechanistic interest centers on its apparent ability to upregulate growth factor expression and modulate nitric oxide signalling pathways involved in tissue repair.

Evidence Status — Well-documented

Well-documented in animal literature; controlled human trial data remains sparse.

The evidence base is extensive at the level of rodent studies — gastric ulceration models, tendon injury models, and wound healing models all appear repeatedly in the preclinical literature. Controlled human trials are comparatively sparse relative to the volume of animal data, which is an important distinction when evaluating how far the preclinical findings can be reasonably extrapolated.
