Oxytocin research spans two fairly distinct areas: its peripheral (bodily) role in uterine contraction and lactation, which has a long pharmaceutical history, and its central (brain) role in social bonding, trust, and affiliative behavior, which is a newer and more actively researched area within social neuroscience.

The peripheral, obstetric applications of oxytocin have an extensive, long-established pharmaceutical research history. The central, behavioral research — the aspect most associated with popular interest in oxytocin — is a genuinely separate and comparatively newer body of literature, worth evaluating on its own terms rather than assuming it carries the same evidentiary weight as the obstetric research.
